Lynne,
Congratulations on the new pooch! I would love to see a picture of an Irish Setter/GSD mix!! As you probably remember, I have Irish Setters.

Re: Farewell
I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't know what's worse: knowing their time is near or being shocked at them leaving so unexpectedly. Either way, the void in our hearts can never be filled by anything else.
Sleep softly sweet Spencer, your Dad will miss you terribly.

Re: Gentle Giant
Lynne, I came to this page this morning having 'a feeling', I don't know where those feelings come from that we get sometimes. I am so incredibly sorry to hear of your loss. We all know what you're going thru and how this feels. I think when we have 'special' pets it hurts more because we've tried t...

Re: Jake's Big Day
Happy belated birthday, Jake!!
Lynne, you are so lucky to have him this long, I sure wish my MK would have been as fortunate. He would have been 13 on August 17, I'll never stop missing him.
Enjoy that ice cream Jake and don't let your mother make ice cream a once per year thing for you!!

Re: Our worst nightmare
I used to show my dogs, too, and I know that the good breeders who really want to better the breed will take an interest when there's a health issue and try to breed away from those issues in future breedings. The bad breeders ignore and usually blame the dog owner for the epilepsy..that happened to...

Re: Our worst nightmare
THat's terrible, I'm so sorry. Did the breeder know there was epilepsy in the lines when Lola's mother/father was bred? This sort of thing infuriates me!! If breeders don't know that is one thing, but if they do know there's an issue and uses seizing dogs in their breeding program that is unexcuseab...

Re: 4 Month Old Great Dane Puppy
Did your vet check for liver shunts? I know in small pups that seize that is one of the first things they check.

Re: Achilles: Dire condition
He's probably still suffering the effects of that 30 minute seizure. I agree with Lynne, he might be having issues with the Pb, too. You could try a neurologist because neurology is their specialty. Your primary vet treats everything. so although they know a little about a lot, they don't usually kn...

Re: Not doing well
KBr can be rough on some dogs. It causes ataxia, increased thirst and I'm convinced it caused some sort of lung problem for my boy that ultimately took his life. I cannot believe that vet intimated that you should put your dog down!! Has she tried cutting back on the dosage?? Sounds to me like your ...

Re: Need to share some place
If he had a lot of seizures it CAN take a while for them to recoup. A new medication can also cause grogginess, thirst, increased hunger, etc., hopefully he'll adjust and feel better soon. A huge part of most of our problems is; we have to rule out one at a time, drugs or anything else we think migh...

Re: Need to share some place
Bromide is salt, so it makes Deacon thirsty. Have you noticed him drinking more? Sorry you're going thru this. I always told myself when I started feeling sorry for me that they're stuck in their bodies and are doing the real suffering..it's not their fault. We have to deal with the financials and t...

Re: New here, but not new to canine epilepsy
I'm so sorry that your dog (and you) are going thru this. I have had two dogs (who are related) with seizures, the first one started about 10 days after getting his vaccines, so of course the 'experts' in our breed blamed me for vaccinating my boy. I work at a medical school and have been told by se...

Re: aggression since diagnosis
It might be the potassium bromide because irritability is a side effect in some dogs. I had a boy who clustered and was on the KBr and he was cranky while on it although he didn't bite unless he was coming out of a seizure and thought my fingers were food. (bit me once, but thought my hand was food)...

Re: Add Zonisamide or increase Keppra dose?
I haven't noticed any side effects with the zonisamide, but every dog is different. Pb and KBr are the two that are known for hind end weakness and increased thirst and hunger, I didn't see anything like that when using Keppra or when we started the dogs on zonisamide. (I have dealt with two epi boys)

Re: Length of post-ictal phase following cluster
I'm so sorry that your Sam (and you) are going thru this. My boy's post ictal lasted one hour, but when they cluster it's harder on them as one can well imagine, so depending on how long the seizures last and how many they have, the post ictal could last a couple of days. After a cluster my boy wasn...
