Re: Quality of Life--new to forum

I haven't posted for over a year now. We lost our Saylor to epilepsy at the age of just 4, she meant everything to me! I think the "quality of life" issue is the toughest question. Saylor suffered grand mal cluster seizures just about every week. She was on so much medication that as a german shephe...

Re: epilepsy vs GME--post ictal symptoms

We unfortunately lost our pet last June to epilipsy. I can offer you only my own experiences with this devil! Our vet at the time said that having a seizure is comparable to running a marathon--they are completely exhausted. When you couple that with multiple seizures I can only imagine how hard tha...

Having just lost our girl to epilepsy a month ago I can tell you that I completely understand how you feel! I prefer to think that our Saylor is running, jumping and enjoying all the things that she didn't get to enjoy recently--she was just 4. She is at peace and is your Raven. It seems to me all t...

our loss

I just wanted to post that we had to put to sleep our precious Saylor this morning. She suffered at least 5 grand mal seizures last night and we just couldn't stand to see her go through any more. We never achieved good seizure control over these past 3 years unfortunately. I cannot begin to tell yo...

I am awaiting the results from the thyroid panel that was drawn last week and sent to Michigan State. When she had a test done in March it was well below normal. But my vet said that pb can skew the results. I'm eager to see what they have to say. I'll let you all know.

adding Gabapentin

I just got back from the vets office with Saylor, our 4 year old German Shepherd, to consult with the dr. about adding on another med. She mentioned Gabapentin as an option. She also mentioned zonisamide. Saylors ataxia is pretty bad so we are trying to find something that doesn't have the same side...

the vet said that it is the fastest, closest way to give valium. I must say that I've never heard of this method before but the dr. is from University of North Carolina State, they are very knowledgeable from what I understand.

Just got off the phone with our vet. Has anyone heard of giving valium in the nose during a seizure to stave off another? That is what they told me to do rather than give an extra dose of pb at first. We've always given it through the rectum, but as mentioned it hasn't worked to break a cluster. Her...

thanks so much for the information. I plan on speaking to our vet today and mention the drugs you suggested. What a great site this is for those of us with pets that have this issue!

no we haven't, partly because of $ as Saylor weighs 92 lbs. and also because they seem to need it three times as day. I will check with my vet to see her thoughts about adding another med.

are we at the end of the road?

Our german shepherd, just about 4, is refractory epileptic. She clusters and we've had very little control over the past 2 and 1/2 years since her first seizure at the age of 1 1/2. She takes kbr (2 ml bid) and pb (162mg bid). Neither can be raised any further, ataxia is pretty bad making it almost ...

We had our primary vet contact North Carolina State University for a no-charge consultation. The phone number is 919-513-6692. It might be worth a call yourself to see what they will need to make informed decisions for your pet. Good luck. Our pet, Saylor, has never had great control and she is on b...

Just got back Saylors blood work from her hospital stay this past weekend. They are saying that her T4 was below normal--relating to thyroid. Has anyone had a lower than normal thyroid test result? They are suggesting that she have a full thyroid panel done (and sent out of state) but also said that...

Thank you Vivian and Jane for your suggestions. I've not heard of clorazapate but will check with her vet. Should the extra pb be given with the first seizure or second, etc.? I do think I'll be looking for a vet that is more knowledgable with epilepsy. She was under the care of a neuro but I wasn't...
