Re: Keppra and advice for a newbie that leaves dog home alon

Hi DS, For some dogs there is a honeymoon period with Keppra. We had it with Jake and tweaked his dosing many many times over the years. The good thing is that Keppra can be given at fairly high doses without any long term effects. As with most things it really does depend on the dog. It's great tha...

Re: Newbie with questions

We'd were looking into CBD oil when Jake died. What we found was that while there is a lot of information about CBD oils, when it comes to dogs the problem is with dosing. There are a few people here that have tried and it worked fairly well for two and the others it didn't help at all. I think the ...

Re: New type seizure - question re Add Pb to Keppra

It's very scary putting our babies on these meds. When we started Jake on Pb I cried for a week because I was so sure we were hurting him. I thought he'd be dopey forever and that we'd lose him. He was dopey for about 2-3 weeks, but nothing that kept him from running and enjoying being outside. Slow...

Re: Keppra not working

We never had an MRI done on Jake. Mainly because we couldn't afford it and later when he was much older we knew that even if he had a tumor there was really nothing that could be done. They can see other abnormalities but the main reason they do them is to see if there's a tumor. If you can afford i...

Re: I really need advice. Medications are not really helping

I'm sorry things are so rough right now. Has your vet talked to you about giving extra meds after seizures to prevent clusters? Do you have Rectal Valium available to you? You can also give up to an extra dose of Pb after the first seizure to help prevent more. If Rectal Valium doesn't help you can ...

Re: Gentle Giant

Hi Everyone, I just wanted to give you an update. After Jake died I didn't think this would ever happen, but we adopted a rescue just before Christmas. His name is Bodi. He's an Irish Setter/Shepherd mix and he's about a year old. At first I hesitated because of the epilepsy connection to both of th...

Re: Keppra not working

Hi Mary Lou, I'm sorry you and Ziggy are having such a hard time today. I know it's early on in all of this but has your vet mentioned Phenobarbital or Zonisamide yet? I know Pb can sound scary but with regular testing any problems can be caught early. Jake was on it for over 9 years and didn't have...

Re: seizures after vacines

There are a lot of vets that believe vaccines lower the threshold for seizures and just as many that don't feel that way. I know that's not much of an answer. Since your dog is 12 she shouldn't have needed anything but her rabies vaccine unless she's at high risk for distemper etc. Is there a reason...

Re: Ataxia Getting Worse

We didn't give Jake Potassium Bromide, but a few local epi dogs that I know of were having problems with ataxia from it. Two were very severe to the point where the owners were within days of putting the dogs down because of it. They reduced the amount and one completely weened off from it and the d...

Re: Nothing is Working!

I'm so sorry you're going through all of this. Our Jake was an Aussie so I have a very special place in my heart for them. This disease is wreaking havoc with this breed. I don't know of many Aussies that get control, but do hope Darby shows us all how it's done. We never got control but Jake lived ...

Re: Border collie with idiopathic epilepsy

It sounds like you're starting to get control of his seizures. Unfortunately the medications can work for some dogs and not work the same way for others so it's a wait and see thing. We never got control of Jake's seizures, but he still lived a long happy life despite having them every 2-3 weeks. I ...

Re: 50+ Seizures in less than 12 hours

I would take her to an emergency hospital right away. The head bobbing, twitching and leg tremors could very well be seizures still continuing. Once you get her there check to see if you can consult with or see a neurologist. 50 seizures in 12 hours is very dangerous. It's called status. Without an ...

Re: Sudden status epilepticus and not responding well

Is there any way you can contact your vet and find out why they don't have her on regular Phenobarbital tabs? Also, check about getting her on Clorazepate right away if possible. Personally I would take her back to the emergency hospital right away and have them give the prescriptions for you. I'm n...

Re: Cluster Seizures Across 3 days

Hi, It's so scary when our dogs have multiple seizures. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I can't think of many other things that can make you feel more helpless. It sounds like they're doing everything right so far. I think I'd ask why your vet took her off from Pb instead of adding the ot...

Re: Tips on how to deal with epileptic dog?

Hi Gina, For someone not having English as their first language you did better than I can do sometimes :) I'm so sorry you're having to take on this horrible disease. Is it possible for you to go with your mom on a day that she works and find a vet nearby? I think it would help you a lot to talk to ...
