Re: Preventing weight gain on meds
If Winston is on phenobarb, the drug is likely to keep dogs from sleeping at night. My Kirby until just recently would get me up every hour and half all night long. Only once in this waking did he have to take care of business. He just couldn't sleep, so he wanted me up with him too. I was extremely...

Re: new to all these meds
I started making the oatmeal muffins for Kirby, as he got hungry. I make them into 1 tbspn size balls and feed them off and on due to how hungry he is. The oatmeal seems to be a good belly filler and he seems to really like them. I got the recipe off the epi-guardian angel site. He now has to be on ...

Re: Has Anyone Used Levetiracetam (Keppra) Twice Per Day?
Hey sheltie1, I also have a sheltie with seizures. We just found out that he has Hypertriglyceridemia, which shelties are the number 3 breed known for this problem. Just a suggestion, but you may want to have a lipid panel done on your guy to check for this. This condition causes seizures, even when...

Hypertriglyceridemia
So we have had an interesting week. Kirby had a 2 min seizure on Sat the 16th. His longest one so far. We were scheduled for labs on Tues the 19th. In running the labs, they said Kirby had a lot of fat in his blood. So we did a lipid panel and his cholesteral came in at normal levels but his triglyc...

Re: Financial cost of epilepsy
Krby just had his labs drawn, however the bloodwork didn't go right so we have to go back in, this time after fasting him for 24 hours. His Pb test was $113.68 and his KBr test was $165.71. We go to the emergency vets, so I think that's why it's more expensive. The 2 month s of KBr was about $50.00 ...

Re: Long post-ictal phases
Since I've posted this we were started on KBr 500 mg tablet once a day and since then we have had very few seizures, and when he does, his post ictal period is down to 1 1/2 to 3 hr period instead of the 3 days. He has also started sleeping better, instead of getting me up 4+ times a night, now he w...

Re: Seizures when not home ...
What internet camera do you use to keep an eye on your kids when you are gone? I'm looking into it, so I can see how Kirby does when I'm gone.
Thanks

Midazolam
Has anyone tried this drug? I have a friend that uses this on her daughter, that she said goes up the nose and does a great job on stopping cluster seizures. Do you think this might be an effective drug versus rectal valium on dogs? Thanks Karen & Kirby (2 yr old sheltie) First sz 10/29/2012 Last sz...

Long post-ictal phases
I'm so glad I found this forum, Kirby and I are just starting our battle with epilepsy. Kirby started having seizure type activity in July 2012. Walking aimlessly, head jerking, acting like he was getting shocked and running. These would last for up to 3 hrs at a time. Went to the vet, and they want...
