Seizure after 15 months seizure free
Aack. Winston had a very short seizure this morning. Maybe 10 to 15 seconds? And a very fast recovery. But he had been seizure free since he started phenobarbital 15 months ago. He is probably around 7 years old now and was put on the pheno when his seizure frequency increased. He's a 22 pound poodl...

Re: New to CEN
Our dog Winston (poodle mix) has been on PB since April. He is a rescue dog, already about 2 years old when we adopted him, and probably already epileptic, although it took us a while to figure it out. For almost 4 years, he had seizures only about 4 times a year, but then he had 5 in 9 weeks and wa...

Re: Newly Diagnosed and Very Concerned!!
Can you encase it in soft cheese (if it's small enough)? My dog will gulp down anything if it's in cheese. However, he has a small pill (phenobarbital) rather than a capsule. It really does take them time to adjust to these meds. Winston was so wobbly the first week I was sure he was overdosed, but ...

Re: Wondering when to begin medication
I was told to start meds when the seizure frequency was more than once a month. Winston had infrequent seizures, about every 3 months, for nearly 4 years before he started having them more frequently (had 5 in 9 weeks) and went on phenobarbital (no seizures in six months since starting it, crossing ...

Re: My story ... so far
Status seizure means a seizure that just keeps going on and on. It's a life threatening emergency.
Our dog is on Phenobarbital and after a two week adjustment period, he has no real side effects and no seizures. He had a relatively mild case of epilepsy compared to some here, though.

Re: Dealing with fleas with an epi-dog household?
We use Comfortis, and have also used Frontline in the past with no problems other than it's sort of greasy and stains coats. We have a white poodle mix also. I'm sure it varies from dog to dog, but with our dog I've never seen a correlation between flea treatments and seizures. (Edit) I feel I must ...

Very sorry to hear of Cali's seizures. That must be so stressful and so disappointing, that she had gone for so long and then had this happen. This disease IS a monster.

Re: Finally had to start meds
We've managed to keep it at 6 am, sometimes 6:30, in spite of the days lengthening. I swear this dog has a clock in his head. I go to bed at 9:30 in order to get my 8 hours, but that has always been the case. I am not a 'night person'. Nine and a half weeks now, still no seizures (yay!), and he has ...

Re: Finally had to start meds
Hi Chris, I haven't made a video, but those 'weird seizures' where he isn't unconscious have only happened a couple of times. The other 15 or so seizures he's had over the past 4 years, he was unconscious during the seizure. So anyway, I do think they are real seizures. He wasn't on any other meds e...

Sorry to hear this sad news. For what it's worth, I agree with your decision, but it's still terribly hard.

Re: Preventing weight gain on meds
I'm trying the frozen green bean thing, and Winston seems to enjoy them. He is now staying asleep until 5 am, which is early by about an hour (better than 3 am). I have been ignoring him banging his crate door. I know he doesn't need to pee, given that once he is out of the crate he stays inside for...

Re: new to all these meds
Hi, I'm new to all of this also, but a lot of people recommend baby carrots or green beans as a filler. That's a lot of meds to adjust to. Poor guy. How old is your dog? My little guy has been put on phenobarbital only as of last week, and his appetite is a concern to me also. He is a rescue dog who...

Re: Preventing weight gain on meds
Oh, OK. Thanks for the reply. Winston actually isn't drinking much extra and has had no problems having to pee during the night, thank goodness. I thought it might be an issue but it isn't. Will try the frozen green beans. I believe his current dog food is grain-free (Wellness Core). I think maybe h...

Preventing weight gain on meds
Hi again, Winston is still very wobbly and lethargic 5 days in. I do notice he has good appetite and am concerned about weight gain. He is at the top of normal already and can't afford to gain more. Do you give your dogs carrots or other low calorie treats? I have been feeding him the same as always...

Re: Finally had to start meds
Thanks for the reply. Winston is still very lethargic and wobbly. He is lying down and his head rocks slightly back and forth sometimes too. This is the fourth day of the meds. I called the vet yesterday to make sure he is not overdosing or something. The vet said that if he is eating (he is) to jus...
