aggression? Anyone have experience?

Glory was recently hospitalized for one week for unremitting focal seizures. Her Keppra and PB were increased by 50% each. Zonisamide was added (300mgbid). Since her discharge she has exhibited aggressive behavior towards small children on two occasions. The first was right after her discharge. A hy...

Re: High dose of Keppra

Hi
When your dog is on PB, you need higher levels of Keppra. Apparently PK metabolizes Keppra more quickly. Many of us here have dogs with refractory epilepsy that are on high doses of medication. Good luck and I hope the keppra works for you.

fingers (mine) and toes (glory's) that everything continues to go well with Apollo. It is amazing how our pups can continue to have seizures even with so much medication on board.

Re: Bad, bad week :(

wondering how Apollo is doing. Glory had her week from hell with similar seizure problems right before her 6th birthday. With her increased meds and addition of Zonisamide, she is doing better--so that hell had a silver lining. Hope you are doing better with Apollo.

Re: New here! Maverick, our7 yr old Cockapoo

I have read that medication is considered for epileptic dogs if seizures are more frequent than once a month or are clusters ( more than one seizure in 24 hours). It is a matter of weighing the effects of the seizures vs side effects of medication. many vets start dogs on Phenobarbitol which is inex...

Re: Help, need advice, drunk dog

Thanks, Colleen! Poor Glory is on such high doses and at the upper end of therapeutic levels. When the neurologist warned me that at these doses she might always be ataxic, my heart broke for my happy athletic girl. I wanted to cry every time she wanted to play but would fall over. I cannot tell you...

Re: Question about coping with your dog's condition

Oh boy, that is a hard one to answer. Glory had a history of cluster seizures every three weeks which did not change in spite of medication. A couple of months ago she spent a week in ICU with unremitting seizures and had an MRI, spinal tap, full body X-rays, and testing for every possible disease t...

Re: new to CEN and puppy daycare

Hi I feel for you. I remember what it felt like when Glory started having seizures. It is heartbreaking. If it was my dog I would continue with puppy day care (after checking with your vet) Anything that makes your pup happy is worth doing. He won't be having seizures alone. Exercise and excitement ...

Re: Help, need advice, drunk dog

Glory is no longer ataxic, is back to doing Agility. Because of her recent episode requiring hospitalization and her current success
on medication regime I am changing nothing for the time being.

Re: Keppra or Levetiracetam

Hi Beth,
Not sure of the action of Keppra, but a negative MRI is good news--no brain tumor! As to EEG--will only show up positive if seizure activity is going on at the time of the EEG. Hope this helps.

Re: Questions on Pheno

Glory had no improvement on pheno or keppra, but with zonisamide she had a series of three breakthrough seizures, facial focal and trembling. She typically has 3 cluster seizures all within 30 minutes. Her three breakthrough seizures did not lead to a later grand mall seizure. Do you have valium to ...

Re: Questions on Pheno

Glory started out on Phenobarbital with virtually no side effects except increased hunger. I had panicked over starting her on Pheno and was relieved that it affected her so minimally. As everyone here says every dog responds differently.

Re: Vet wants to add zonisamide to keppra

Thanks Lynne, When Glory stabilizes after this major trauma I may pursue some alternatives also--acupuncture, reiki, and perhaps herbs too. I will definitely try another holistic vet. The one I went to was great in some ways, well-liked by other dog owners in my obedience club, and very reputable--b...

Re: Vet wants to add zonisamide to keppra

Hi Lynne, What Chinese herb is your dog on? I started out with a holistic vet as I was so afraid of the side effects of the medication ( the risks of reading posts in CEN forums) I think that was a mistake. When Glory started having cluster seizures I decided to go on regular medications, which were...
