No, same foods, same treats. I did look over the log and realized that Jack stopped having seizures when he got to 60 mg of Phenobarbital. That was towards the end of April. So it is possible only Merlin has some kind of environmental trigger and Jack is now just under better control. (Merlin's medi...

I don't think it is stress. I think a home would have to be very stressful for that to be an epilepsy trigger, and mine just is not. Plus nothing changed when the seizures started as far as stress levels.. no new people, no new schedule. I only use chlorox to clean the toilets, and rinse until the o...

Well, we aren't 100% sure it isn't coincidental that they stopped over the summer as Jack had just gotten to a therapeutic level of phenobarbital and I put them both on Vitamin E. Merlin had one seizure this week (back home) but I had forgotten his morning pills and while it doesn't matter for pheno...

The water is a possibility; I filter what goes into the dog dish but those two dogs drink from the toilet. I've been trying to keep the lid down so they can't. The other dogs do not drink from the toilet. Getting the water tested is on the list. No local sprays; a neighbor might have treated for ter...

Triggers

My two seizure dogs stopped altogether while we were at our summer home (for three months.) So now I'm brainstorming possible environmental triggers. If your dog has an environmental trigger (known or suspected) please list it here. I've eliminated all the obvious ones like cleaning solutions, perfu...

Just start phoning animal hospitals in your area and asking them if they know of any neurologists. I know I can look them up; I just don't trust finding a good vet that way. I ran into a horrible specialist in Seattle a few years ago (and that was a referral from a vet.) So I'd rather know someone ...

Well, after a week on 100 mg Zonisamide Jack had another seizure, so I think he's switching over to Phenobarbital.

Merlin is doing pretty well. We added 100 mg twice a day of Zonisamide to 45 mg twice a day of Pb. He went 24 days without a seizure and only had one when I tried to lower the Pb to 30 mg. He started Zonisamide March 15 and since then has had only one seizure. Started Jack on 25mg BID then upped it ...

Having a dog become senile makes that decision really hard, because they don't always let you know they are suffering. And maybe they really aren't, because they don't know what is going on. You have to look at his quality of life- is eating the only thing left he enjoys? Does he know you, and enjoy...

You might ask your vet about giving Valium on the day the other dog is coming. A friend of mine who is a human neurologist said her patients sometimes take Valium for situations which they know can be seizure triggers, so I asked my vet if we could try it for Jack, who was seizing the day after Merl...

There are other drugs. I didn't want to add KBr to Merlin's Pb because he already had so much reaction to the Pb, so I did some research and persuaded my vet to try Zonisamide. We are keeping our fingers crossed that it is working (he is only about 19 days on it but so far no seizures.) Merlin is a ...

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, but I think you are doing the right thing after trying everything possible to help your dog. It is a very discouraging story, and I know you must feel very frustrated and cheated that others get complete control on the first try.

I'm not saying they can't have wheat allergies; I am questioning the statement that eating wheat is not natural to dogs.

What brand of dog food would not have any grain? I use one without corn (Canidae) but have used biscuits with corn (I'm going to avoid that now.) As far as the statement that dogs do not plant fields, well, dogs have attached themselves to humans since before humans planted fields- they certainly ha...
