Video of Jackson's Seizure

I finally figured out how to use my digital camera as a video recorder....it's actually very simple! I made a short video of Jackson's seizure yesterday and put it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O-ITxln1t8 or else you can search for "dog seizure epilepsy jackson" The picture is rea...

All the dogs have different reactions to heartworm meds. Jackson got almost instant seizures from Heartguard Plus, but his seizures also seemed to permanently increase in frequency after taking Interceptor although i'm not as sure about that connection. My impression is that these drugs can cause a ...

Oh poor Barney, I'm sorry about this. I know what you mean about keeping him at the vet's office. I've never been able to leave my dogs there for more than the bare minimum....it's too depressing. But if they can get his seizures to stop, then I'm thinking the "lost" look should clear up in time. Af...

I don't think i've heard of Epitrol, but i've tried a few Chinese herbs and they did nothing as far as i could tell. And i've heard other people also say they do nothing. I've never heard anyone with an epileptic dog say that they had great results with herbs. In my biased and cynical opinion, of co...

Debby, sounds a little scary to me too. Do you know what Dylan's Pb blood level is at? If it's quite low, and if his liver is doing well, I don't see why you shouldn't keep him on it. I wonder if anyone keeps good statistics showing how dogs do when the drugs are stopped. Manymanyhounds, can you pro...

The thing about epilepsy is that it's basically a catch-all term that they use whenever they can't figure out any other reason for seizures....which is almost always. It's very hard to say what is typical because every dog has different symptoms. But yes, what you described was actually the case wit...

Never heard of mouth ulcers from KBr but i could believe it. The thing i find hard to believe is that putting it on bread is any better than putting it on dog food. Why would that be? Unless maybe he loves bread so much that he swallows it whole instead of chewing it in his mouth. I'm skeptical. It ...

What kind of nimrod would abandon an old dog in a park? If i ran the world i'd make people undergo a series of tests before i'd allow them to own a pet. And judging by the stories i hear, at least half of them would fail. But back to the little old pug. How old do you think he is? 15? I wouldn't put...

Yikes, the poor dog, that wouldn't make me too happy. But i think it's not all that uncommon. My brother's dog was also having hip surgery and they shaved the wrong leg and were about to operate on it when luckily my brother noticed and told them. Hope Casey pulls through ok without too much painful...

Oh, thanks, but i didn't mean to imply that he's not doing well....he's doing great....except for this crazy licking thing he's got going on, and nobody has ever heard of it or knows what i'm talking about. He acts like someone put a huge glob of peanut butter in his mouth....lots of licking and swa...

Results of Stopping Jackson's KBr

This is still ongoing but wanted to give some preliminary results. I stopped giving Jackson KBr cold turkey about 8 weeks ago because of bad side effects....vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis, mega-esophagus (some of these may not have been related to the KBr...hard to say for sure). I have read that ...

Yeah, the Keppra is very expensive, but there are options that I haven't tried yet. I currently pay $262 per month for Keppra from Walgreens, using their W Discount Card which costs $20 per year but saves more than that every month on the cost of drugs. You can get generic Keppra mail order from Can...

Interesting stuff, not sure what to make of it. I would say though that using steroids is common enough that if it generally reduced seizures in epi dogs the doctors would have figured that out by now. Another part of this fits in with something else that i've wondered about. I guess we've all seen ...

Oh, i get it. Yeah that does sound worrisome...weird how all those seizures are coming all of a sudden. What are the risks of going beyond max levels on the KBr? My impression is that the risks aren't as dangerous as they are when exceeding max Pb levels (liver damage), but i'm not sure. How about t...

Vivian, why is the primary vet concerned about MK being only 3 years old and breaking through the meds? I don't understand why age has anything to do with his concern. And i thought it was pretty much expected that all epi dogs will occasionally have seizures, drugs or not. Am i wrong about that? I ...
