Re: Something Interesting

Hi, Lynne, That news doesn't surprise me. One guy who walks his dog with Apache and I mentioned that his ex-wife is epileptic. She will only have seizures during her period. The reason given to her was that it was the one time of the month where she is more worn down and tired. I guess it makes sens...

Re: brain damage?

I would definitely give it some more time. The poor girl just went through a lot lately. If she was just pumped up with a lot of medication, this certainly could be the cause of the behaviour you see today. Give her time to adjust. You should see an improvement in a few days. You can try and attempt...

Pheno Question

Our guy is still strictly on Phenobarbital. The kind of control we had (and I say that loosely) has now been lost. Guess it's time for us to give in and increase his dosage as per the vets request. Just was wondering, though. For those who have only used Phenobarbital, has anyone tried giving the Pb...

Re: Question about breaking a cluster with Valium or Pb

I can tell you that so far we've had 100% success rate when giving our guy an extra dose of Phenobarbital immediately after his initial seizure. He generally continues to seize once or twice afterward, but after an hour and a half to 2 hours the extra Pheno kicks in and his seizing stops. Wishing yo...

Re: Last Resort Treatment

Great to hear from you, Joe! Speck's case is probably the most difficult one I have read about. When there was no word from you for a while, I kind of thought the worst happened. So happy to hear that she's doing considerably better on the Felbamate. (I have never heard of that medication before). W...

Re: Anyone with a 130lb Dog?

Romus, Our guy, Apache, is a 130 pound German Shepherd. He's still solely on Phenobarbital and his dosage at the moment is 360 mg's daily. (2 x 180 mg's). However, our vet would like to see him on 480 mg's daily, which they told us (10 months ago) would be the minimum dose for his weight. We have be...

Re: seizures getting WORSE, now I'm trying a new combo!

Nick, Sorry to hear about Fleur's passing. Given her various other medical problems, you did the kindest thing. She is now at peace and joining a number of other friends from this board. Be strong! A decision like that is never easy to make. But know that you did in fact make the right choice. We ha...

Re: seizures getting WORSE, now I'm trying a new combo!

Nick, Sorry to hear that Fleur is going through a very rough time, as are you. I've been down that road too often, especially of late. First and foremost, you must try and stop her seizing. Can you not give Fleur a double dose of Phenobarbital? So many hours have passed that I can't see why your vet...

Re: Severe Ataxia and Weakness

Melynda, I am deeply saddened by the news. My deepest condolences go out to you. You did everything possible for him,...you must know that. He 'is' by your side, and in due time, you will reflect on solely the good times. You may have only had him for 9 months, but those 9 months were truly special....

Re: Severe Ataxia and Weakness

Hi, Melynda, Sorry to hear that Gauge is going through a rough time of it recently. By your description, it sure sounds like he experienced some sort of seizure while you were not present. Sure has the classic signs/symptoms, anyway. What about the vomiting, though? Could he have possibly caught som...

Re: Valium's effects on behavior

We used to give our guy, Apache, a double dose of Phenobarbital immediately after his first seizure. We have since cut that down to 1/4 extra dose,...with success in breaking the clustering thus far. That being said, though, when he had a double dose he would drive us crazy for several days later. R...

So sorry to hear about Dixie passing on. She certainly had her share of issues, poor girl. I'm sure she appreciated everything you had done for her. She is at peace, now. Bless her soul!

I am so saddened to hear this news about Ben. News like this gets to me everytime as I get very emotional while reading it. Such a young fellow, too. My heart goes out to you, Katarina as I'm sure this is a difficult time for you. Cherish those fun times you had with Ben! God bless him!

Re: Need some help

Hi, Rich, Well, Apache tops the scale at 130 pounds and we give him 600 mg's twice a day. One at breakfast and one at supper. Apparently from what we've been told, we're actually on the conservative side for his weight. But, judging from the responses thus far, I'm beginning to question his dosage n...

Re: Effects of medication...

Hi, Shmo, Welcome aboard, and sorry to hear about Gizmo's seizures. It certainly is tough to witness the first few. I still find it tough watching our guy go through them, but I must confess that we are more at ease and prepared than when they first started. We always remain extremely cautious, thou...
