Re: Hector Very quiet.

Our guy usually gets very clingy and restless leading up to seizure activity. That being said, though, if it's unusual behaviour for Hector it could mean that one is on the horizon. Hopefully one is not on its way, but good of you to keep track of abnormal behaviour. There often is tell-tale signs w...

Re: New Treatment for Gran Mal Seizures?

Interesting! That drug, better known as Xanax is widely prescribed to treat panic attack disorders. Between Xanax, and Ativan, I sometimes wonder if we wouldn't start seeing better control for Epilepsy with our pets? Have you only given her the one pill, or have you had to administer a few since the...

I am so sorry to hear the news, Tina. God bless her that she was able to make it that far in life. Treasure all the good memories and know that you did whatever possible to help her live a happy life. She had a great home! Stay strong, and I wish you my deepest condolences.

Re: Advanced Imaging

Our vet made mention of the MRI and CT Scan at the very beginning, but never pressed the issue with us. First and foremost, his age was at that ripe time when seizures start with Epilepsy. Secondly, they wanted to help prevent further seizure activity and quickly started him on Phenobarbital. No wor...

Re: Epileptic Bullmastiff Puppy.

Welcome, and sorry to hear about Hector's seizing. He certainly started at quite a young age. Poor fellow. His type of seizures (Grand Mals) are pretty much what a good chunk of us experience with our beloved dogs, including our guy, Apache. Not a pleasant sight, and yes, scary. I did take some comf...

Re: Troubles with Excessive Urination

I'm with Rich on this one. Give it a bit of time. Our guy is also on Phenobarbital, and although he had a slight desire for more water, he never had an accident in the house. This may sound a little silly, but perhaps reward him when he does pee outside. It's kind of like going back to basic puppy t...

Re: Please may I post a warning

Hi, Vivian, Believe you me, I wouldn't dare take Apache off of his medication. What I was trying to say is that, any bits of info that I pick up pertaining to possibly curing and/or helping Epilepsy, whether it be by conventional or non conventional means, always deserves a good read with me. The cr...

Re: Meltdown in Petsmart

We feed our guy a combination of Acana Ranchlands and Canisource. The latter is a dehydrated food. And like Melynda, we also cook for him. The cooked meals and kibble are given twice daily in rotation. The Acana does have Rosemary in it, but it's listed much further down in the ingredients chart. Fr...

Re: Please may I post a warning

To tell you quite honestly, Orli, I'm kind of on the fence with this one. Her advice about taking dogs off the medication outright is too far-fetched and extremely dangerous, though. But, let's face it. Most of our vets know little about Epilepsy. We have one poster here who has successfully treated...

Re: I'm not alone!!

Ditto, here! Our guy started having seizures at one and a half years of age, too. He, as well, has always been one to cluster after his first episode. We now have liquid valium at our disposal, but thankfully, we haven't needed it yet. I'm with you. I can deal with the seizures, but that post-ictal ...

Re: Seizing GSD

Hi, Janine, If you can, try and get the most extensive blood work you can presently afford for him. You're right, at his age, starting seizure activity is a bit out of the norm. Have you noticed any odd behaviour from him lately? Also, has his appetite increased? How are his stools? We lost our GSD ...

Re: New to forum

Hi, teddysmom, How long are the seizures lasting? Judging from your post, he's not experiencing any post-ictal stage. Rather, he's snapping right out of them. That's good, as the post-ictal stage can be a bugger to deal with. Has the Zonisamide reduced the amount of seizures lately? Sounds like you ...

Re: 3 years and 9 months

Sorry to hear about Savannah passing away. She lived to a good age, though. And, congrats to you for being able to keep her seizure-free for that amount of time using the methods you did. Savannah knows all that you did for her.

Rest in peace, girl.

Re: Cost of taurine levels checked?

Hi, Barb,

You may want to check any sports nutrition retailer in your area. They carry a varied supply of supplements. That's where we buy Apache's taurine.
