Before she started seizing she used to swim a lot. I had to tie her to a long rope or she would keep going out. One night she had a seizure and escaped down our drive and went across the road and fell off the sea wall into the tide. Because she had limited sight after the seizure and was wobbly and disorientated she could not get back up the rocks. Thank God the tide was on the way out otherwise she would have drowned in the waves. My husband had to find her at 3 in the morning and drag her up the rocks. (You know how hard it is to control a dog in this state)
Ever since then she will not go out in the dark (for anything) and does not go near the water. I am hoping that this summer I can get her used to swimming again.

thats one reason I have gone out with Dylan. worrying about my fish pond. my sister had a bosten terrier with epilepsy, hubby let him in the back yard when he left for work. sister found him dead in the pond 1 hour later when she got up. he was 16, so not sure if seizure or heartattack

Hi Debby,
My fingers, arms and toes are crossed for Dylan and you hoping things will be much quieter in the future. It does take a while to get the seizures under control and we played the yo-yo game for quite some time. We went thru 5 increases in PB and KBr and each one, the clumsiness and bumping into things was always there for a while, but they pretty much cleared up after a week. This last increase was really bad though, and I can relate when you were talking about the fish pond. We were visiting my folks when Casey became Ataxic and I had to watch his every move outside for fear he would fall in their pond. I knew there was no way he could ever get back out, if he did fall in. Casey is doing much better now, even though the PB has been cut back, 56 days today seizure free and I'm holding my breath wondering how much longer this will last, but it sure is good right now. Hang in there, it may take time, but I have faith you will find the right combination to help Dylan.
Take care and Big hugs.
Debbie

Hi Debby,
I'm so glad all is still quiet with Dylan. I've included a link from another very good epi site about bromide. When the site comes up just scroll down and click on the globe and it will bring up their information page.
http://www.canine-epilepsy.com I hope this helps and have a great day!

Hi Debby - I have just looked back thru your posts and you said that he is on about 95mg of PB. This is not excesively high and PB has got a worse reputation than it deserves. Do not rush to get him off it just yet. Wait until things have settled down before you start changing meds. They need to be on PB for a long time and even then it does not mean that they get liver problems. Some dogs are on it for years and never show signs of any liver problems. KiKi has been on 400mg/day for nearly a year and tests indicate that nothing has happened to her liver.

sorry, guess I don`t explain myself well. and after his last clusters attack we have increased it to 1 full pill in the am, a half a pill in the afternoon and another full pill in the pm. we are almost 4 days free now. hes a 50 lbs dog. if the bromides take a few months to get to good levels, I am afraid the pb levels will have to stay to high till it catches up.if he has to have high doses to keep his clusters in check, I would rather its on something that won`t cause permenate damage.he is such an intense dog, it took 2 valuim injections at the vet for he even started going to sleep, then he had 2 more seizures that nite, and 3 the next day.
he has adjusted to this doseage in the fact he can lift his leg and play for alittle bit, still can`t take the stairs in 3 leaps. he`s about 80% his normal self.I`m just so confused and want him back the way he was on aug 6th.

Have you thought about getting a thyroid test done on him. Vets will say it's not connected but it is.
Diagnostic testing info is on Guardian Angels site.
I think you are stressing too much about the PB. I admit I wanted KiKi to be off it as soon as possible but after talking the Dr Dodds she explained to me that it has a bad rep that is not justified. Give it a go for a few more months until things settle down a bit. It it is working - great, but don't put Dylan through more than he needs at the moment.

the problem is I don`t know if its working. its been a little over a week sence his last cluster, but 4 days sence his last seizure.next week I go back to work full time.that has me freaked out. the times of his meds are going to have to change.guess I need to take deep breaths and admit that I can not controll this.

Dylan, I would consult another vet. In my unprofessional opinion, there is no risk to introducing the KBr now to get better control. The frequency of the clusters may warrent more aggressive action.

Debby - you will be able to cope. All of us work and you will find a way around the med dosing. Go check with your vet or another as Finn suggested. You might get a better response or alternative ideas. Do you have a neighbour who could give the mid day meds if it is necessary?
