I finally heard back from NCU and they said MK doesn't seize often enough for their study. I thought about Jackson, but if he's already part of the study that's good!!! I'll continue looking for something that can help my kid.

We got Tux's results today. and by my surprise he has tested Normal for MDR1 gene mutation. they are still testing to see if the ivermectin is the cause of his siezures. 52 days now with out a siezure and he hasnt been on Heartgard that since July and it is fully out of his system. even though he didnt test positive for MDR1 we still feel that the Heartgard was the reason for his siezures. we will continue to ween him off his meds and see how he goes one day at a time. and I guess I should be happy he doesnt have the mutate gene. if it is just ivermectin that is causing the seizures then we are much better then him being positive and having to be very carefull of all drugs. We will keep everyone updated.

We will be starting him on Interceptor next week once we can get to the vet to pick it up. We also want to try this while he is still on pb and kbr. He has done exceptionally well with the lower dosage of pb already but we are going down on it ever so slow. 2 weeks now and he went from 2 pills twice a day down to 1 and a half twice a day. We are thinking to take away the another half pill very soon since he has been reacting very well to the lower dosage. Almost 53 days now with out a siezure I am just shocked though that he didnt test positive for MDR1.

I'm glad to hear that you've finally found what has been affecting Tux. Even so, please proceed with caution when weaning him from that drug. It would appear the ivermectin is the culprit, but if it isn't then you are taking a big risk. I took 3 months weaning MK off his Pb and as soon as he took his last dosage he landed in emergency. I'm not saying that will happen to Tux and I hope it doesn't, but you have to do this veeery slowly.

wishing tux the very best of luck.
I took months to wean Dylan down, and as soon as the vet and I talked about weaning the last he had 3. I hadn`t even done it yet.
please don`t push it. Dylan was 2 days short of 11 months free

Afternoon all,
I wish Tux nothing but success and hope that you have found what has been setting the seizures off, but tend to agree with majority here, please be very careful when weaning off the drugs, as we would all hate to see Tux have a relapse with even more problems. This is such a guessing game and many of our pets have had times where they have gone for extended periods of time without seizures, only to have them come back in full force. I do hope Tux will continue to do well and please keep us posted. 53 days is wonderful!

Well We write you all today with heavy hearts. Tux had 3 siezures again last night. He had barely been reduced of pb and no reduction in KBr yet. This really shocked us last night as he had been doing so well. This now leads us to think that Heartgard wasnt the issue. The siezure activity was the same as he normally had when he was going every 9 days. So this was nothing new to us and he had been on the reduced level of pb for 4 days shy of a month today so I really dont think it had anything to do with us bringing him down on his pb. Unfortunately we are back to square one again

I'm sorry you didn't find a cause that could be addressed. I feared weaning him so soon would have this effect. Are you planning to increase his Pb again? It COULD be that you finally found the best dosage for him and it kept him under control for a bit, then the weaning caused him to seize again.
We all want our dogs off of the drugs, but when their seizures are hard to control we have no choice but to keep them on the medications.

I've been thinking about this for whatever that's worth!
Maybe Tux's seizure threshold is very low and the ivermectin DID cause him to seize, but wasn't the only trigger? I think the INterceptor is still a good idea though. Maybe once you switch him to that heartworm med and keep him on his current antiseizure medications, you might find that the little fellow isn't seizing as much as he did before.
I know you're disappointed, more than one of us have been in the same boat. We get our hopes up then they're dashed.

I'm so sorry to hear about Tux and we all totally understand that feeling of disappointment. It was a really good run though. I hope this is just a small set back and you and he can have another good spell. Please give Tux a hug from us and keep us posted.
