Sorry to learn of Tuxs set back. It's a real bummer when this happens. Keep him off the heartguard anyway. It obviously worsens the problem.
I think it takes alot longer to wean off these drugs than we think.
Maybe getting down to half the dose over a 6 month period or more instead of one or two months.
The time he had without a seizure was way better than every few days though. Get him back onto the PB again (I know it's annoying) and try again very, very slowly.

I dont want yall to think we had him off all together of the pb. He barely was weaned down. we went from 4 pills a day to 3 pills a day and that lasted for a month before the seizures last night. We instantly went right back to the extra one last night. But by no means did we have him off of it completely.

I'm so sorry to hear this major set back for Tux. We were all hoping that you had found the cause of his seizures. It just shows us how complicated this thing is.

It is also scary to hear that just a slight change in Pb may have caused the seizures. My vet at after our last check up said we could consider reducing Poppy's medication once she has been seizure free for a year (which will be Dec), I've been too scared to discuss doing this as I don't feel that confident or brave enough to do it.

Good luck and hope Tux will be ok.

No - I didn't think that he was off completely.
I think that instead of dropping 1 pill a day, maybe it should only have been 1/2 or 1/4 and keep at the new level for several months before removing another 1/2 or 1/4.

Sometimes I don't know if they can ever be removed.
I tried this on KiKi - only 1/4 of a tablet at a time every 2 weeks. After several months she was on 1/2 of the original doseage but it made no difference.

Sorry we have been away for so long we have been extremly busy and Tux has been struggling to go more then 18 days again. We decided to put him on to Zonegran and just like that he is on his 3rd longest streak and only 10 days from making this streak be his 2nd longest. Just wanted to check in with everyone and say hi

Hi there - it's good to hear from you. Sorry Tux has been having a rough time of it again.
I think that several here are now adding Taurine. None have been on long enough to see if it is making a difference except MK who seems to be doing OK.

Tux,
What kind of HW preventative do you have your pup on now? It seems as if interceptor might be the catalyst for our collie's seizures--both have happened just days after his monthly dose. I live just 1 hour from Orlando on the coast and of course, mosquitoes are real active here. Were Tux's seizures ever tied to his HW meds? Brodie has been put on taurine and we are in wait-and see-mode to see if it helps.

We have removed him from any heartworm prevenative. We just dont trust it any more. We have him checked on a regular basis and where we leave for some reason we dont get many mosquitoes. But every time we go to the vet which is very often we have him checked. Now his sister we have her on interceptor. But after all the research I have done on heartgard I will never you that on any animal again. We had no complete proof that the hearworm prevenative caused them but it was such a strange coincedence when we forgot to give him it he went from having seizures every 9 days to 2 months. then we made the mistake of weening him off pb and caused some issues. Now we have things back in line and the zonegran has him going strong right now.

its been a long time

Sorry we have been absent from the board for over a year. its with a heavy heart that we come back here tonight. at 10 am this morning we have lost Tux. we finally believe that Tux probably had a tumor or something on his brain. about 3 weeks ago he suffered 11 seizures in 1 day. A little over a week ago Tux stopped eating. We liquefied food for him and forced it down his throat with a turkey baster after he had gone about 5 days with not eating anything and losing a lot of weight. unfortunately he never really digested the food. He showed signs of progress after the food got in him but then last night took a turn for the worst and threw up everything and soon you could see that today was going to be the last day Tux would be with us. at 10am we made the toughest decision of our lives in letting god have our sweet little boy for good. when we were heading for the vet Tux had become non responsive and and no life in his body. He was only breathing. Yall have been a part of our journey with Tux and we will try and check in on everyone a little more often. God Bless
