Oh well! Last night 11:20pm just an hour after we went to bed Kiya had one. It's so disheartening I keep hoping she'll get to that 1 year mark. Last time it was 253 days, I know we are very fortunate to have such good control, but none the less. We'll see how long she can go this time.

Wow! That's pretty darn good! Heart-breaking, I'm sure, when one does occur. Have Kiya's seizures pretty much stayed the same,...the strength and/or length of them?

In the begining they were much more frequent, sometimes once or twice a month then it went to every 3 months or so. As far as the severity, mostly mild. This last one wasn't too bad & recovery was quick. She must have bitten her lip or something there was a little smear of blood on the rug and for the first time in years she peed. I gave her an extra 60mg pb. No real pattern. Last stretch was 253 days.

Oh well, 10 days this time. Last night around 9pm, before bed. This one was definately worse than the last one. I don't know if she ate something, she threw up her dinner earlier. Then was just acting weird. Guess its time to do some testing, as much as I hate to say, possibly an increase in meds. I really just hate this.

Kiya has done so well over time, but I can certainly empathize with you now that her seizures seem to be increasing. Epilepsy is so unpredictable. Just when we think we have it down pat, it switches its pattern. I don't think anyone ever has a TRUE handle on this monster. :(

Darn, so sorry to read that. Kiya has had some lengthy stretches between seizures,...and now two within two weeks. That's crazy! I hate this Epilepsy!!

I wonder if there's a connection with her vomiting earlier on? Perhaps she sensed something coming on?

Anyway, I hope Kiya's most recent trend reverses itself!

Hi Carolyn,
I'm really sorry that Kiya is having problems. Jake's appetite had gotten so strange from his meds and one of the things he eats is dog hair. We have a Samoyed husky that really sheds over the Summer months, so you can imagine how hard it is to keep all of the hair away from him. It's not good for him to do that. A couple of weeks ago he started throwing up hairballs. After one episode he had a seizure. After we made sure that nothing else was going on, we decided that his stomach has probably become sensitive over time because of his medications and ingesting hair doesn't help. We've started giving him dairy-free, soy free yogurt made from coconut milk. He loves it and so far so good.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that Kiya's seizure go away for a very long time.

Take Care,
Linda

Hello everyone, it's been a while, 142 days to be exact. Oh well, my girl Kiya had a seizure last night around 1:30 am. The real kicker is when I took the dogs out last night I looked at the moon and said to my self "there's no connection". I'm bummed out of course but 142 days is a good stretch. I gave her an extra 150mg of pb, this was the protocol from my original vet. I'll keep a close eye on her, hopefully she'll go another long stretch.

Still 142 days is nothing to sneeze at. Congrats!!!

I tracked that full moon thing and was convinced she had seizures then. So not only you.

142 days is not bad at all. I've talked to our vet about the full moon connection because Jake rarely makes it past one. She said that she's checked into and can't find any reason for it but all of her epi dog patients have the same problem. Jake isn't having the best day today, but so far no seizure.
Fingers Crossed.

Congratulations on going the 142 days, Carolyn. That's not too shabby at all! Ironic that if you take her last seizure-free number and reverse it, it's 142.

Also, you folk's are giving me this unnerving feeling about the 'full moon' theory. I too, noticed it early this morning on our walk. I thought absolutely nothing about it, aside from figuring I'll be having to deal with poor driving habits from many motorists today.

I hope your next seizure-free run is even longer, Carolyn.

Lynne, I'll keep my fingers crossed!

UPDATE Re: 241 days

Post by Carolyn » Fri May 29, 2015 8:42 am

I can't believe its been so long. Kiya just celebrated her 11th birthday! For a Shepherd that's great, for a Shepherd with seizures that's pretty incredible!
She started having more frequent seizures in 2013 about 11 that I knew of. I started her on a partial liver cleansing diet because her liver values were in the mid 600's range. In July of 2014 I added turmeric paste to all 3 of my dogs diet including my own. Mainly for inflammatory properties and liver support. Kiya ended up with a 6 month seizure free streak of which I can only attribute to the turmeric. Of course the streak was broken but she's still much better off than she was in 2013. Last week I did our annual heartworm testing and gave treatment the following day. Of course the next day Kiya had a seizure. It doesn't always happen but it did this time.
So to all the new comers to the world of Canine Epilepsy I just wanted to show you that there is hope for a long somewhat normal life with seizures and seizure meds.

Hi Carolyn,
I'm so glad to hear that Kiya has been doing so well! Even though we've had a tougher time with Jake, he's about to turn 11 too! It really makes you look at them and their strengths doesn't it? I agree 100% that even though we have lost far too many dogs to this awful disease there still are many that live a long and happy life despite the seizures and the medications.
Congratulations!!
Lynne
