4 weeks!!

Post by Eley's Mom » Tue Jul 01, 2014 10:57 am

At the risk of jinxing Eley, as of yesterday, she's 4 weeks seizure free!!

That's her longest streak so far since she was diagnosed in February :)
It seems each time we're getting a little farther apart on the seizures. The last streak was 26 days that ended the day we came home from vacation.
I'm really thinking that the excitement of seeing us after 10 days was just overwhelming (at least that's all I can come up with).

we're now to 8 weeks!!!

I know that's not extremely long, but it feels like forever.

Hope everyone else is doing well...the boards have been a little quiet lately. I'll take that as good news :)

Grateful for the good days, weeks (months)!

Hi Diana,

This is great news. It is encouraging and refreshing to get such a break. But be careful because about here it is easy to slip into a comfort zone and relax – stay vigilant on all of Eley’s regimens and needs. I do hope the healthy run continues for you and Eley.

Regards,
Trevor & Spencer

Thank you!

That is certainly the truth! I know that at any day and at any time this dreaded disease can rear it's ugly head and knock us back down.

In a way it's nice to get a slight break, but I worry that I'll get too comfortable with the calm.

I'm still very diligent with her meds, I'm careful to introduce things that may be a trigger, and I catch myself jumping at a sudden movement or watch her extra carefully if she's acting even a little oddly...

I don't know if I could have done it without everyone on this group! When Eley was diagnosed, I thought it was a death sentence and was scared to death. The amount of support from complete strangers on this board has changed my life...

Our lucky streak came to an end last night...

Eley had 9 or 10+ seizures last night. I lost count. I know there were at least 6 at home, at least a couple en-route to the emergency vet, and 1 at the emergency vet.

I gave two doses of rectal valium, nothing broke this cluster.

Eley ended up staying the night at the emergency vet and got a loading dose of pheno and a shot of midazolam and was seizure free after that.

I'm soooo happy though that we were able to get to 8.5 weeks though!
Now, just waiting to hear from the regular vet if we're going to finally add in potassium bromide, increase pheno, or anything else.

Sorry to hear this, Diana.

I will be thinking of you and Eley, especially over the next groggy week. (I hope the post ictal is not to severe).
My prayers go out to you and Eley.

Trevor.

When I called the emergency vet this morning apparently she was playing. lol

She seems to bounce out of it pretty well...even to the surprise of the vets.
10+ seizures is no joke, but she handles it like a champ somehow.

Today she's been mostly sleeping, hungry, and occassionally whiny. Overall, we can't complain much at all.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts :)

Hi Diana,
I'm sorry you had such a tough time of it. With Jake it's always seems that if he goes more than 30 days his seizures aren't necessarily bad but the post ictal is. He doesn't pace a lot but he can't settle down and the threat of more seizures is right there. Over and over. We can usually stave them off. But then within one or two days it happens again. We just went through that. It's the reason we've never pushed hard to get him past 3-4 weeks. It's just never been good for him. For now, 1 very very mild seizure with no post ictal every 3-4 weeks is good.
I hope you get Eley's dosing figured out. It can be frustrating but not impossible.
Take Care,
Lynne

Sorry Diana. This disease is so difficult. At least you have a good attitude about the 8 1/2 weeks of seizure freedom. It's disappointing (at least for me) when you can go so long and then bam. We're hanging in there though as I am sure you and Eley will. Sometimes it's just a tweak of the dosing or an addition of medication to stop the clusters and get them back on track. Winston has so far been having either one or two a month without clustering and I can handle that but those awful cluster seizures are hard to take. Keep us posted on how you guys are doing and I hope that a little adjustment gets you another 8 1/2 weeks or more!
