Cali, 8 seizures total, 4 of those on Monday, new to this.

Hi, in July my 20 month female 62 pound old lab/chow/cocker mix had a bad bout of vomiting (12 times in the morning) and liquid poops. The vet gave her some meds and switched her to science diet canned I/D (she was on Orijen). A little over 2 weeks later, in August, she had a 5 minute Grand Mal Seizure, violent paddling and very protective of herself once it ended, mouth wide open, foam, yelling at me, wobbly upon standing, then fine. Straight to the ER, bloodwork and xrays fine.

In Sept, another seizure, nobody home, don't know how long it lasted, straight to ER VET, she was back on the Flagyl so vet thought it could be the meds so were instructed, never again give Flagyl. Was eating Royal Canin Low Fat dry, didn't take well to trying to switch her back to Orijen.

On Nov 1st, she had 2 seizures, 3+ minutes, at dog sitter. To the vet, bloodwork still fine. I got back from vacation and started the switch back to Orijen dog food.

On Nov 14th, she had 4 seizures. 4am, 11am, 3pm (while at vet, they gave her valium to help prevent another), started on zonisamide at 6pm, last seizure at 8:30pm...all lasting 1-2 minutes of severe paddling, then 2 minutes of laying motionless, but not there, then up and didn't want to eat me, I had put an icepak on her back for these episodes as had read online and my vet hadn't heard of it but said, couldn't hurt. Extreme pacing for an hour, around and around my kitchen island, then sleep.

So I'm going grain free again, back on Orijen, since this all started after her stomach issues. I have the ice pak at the ready. Vet did a bile acid test yesterday, hope to have results today. She is currently on 150mg Zonisamide 2x day (I bought 60 pills of the 100 and 60 of the 50 at CVS for $167, called Costco, $27, I guess I know where I'm going next month).

Thanks,
Chris, dog mom, owned by 2 labs

Sorry to hear about your dog. Hopefully the meds will keep the seizures at bay. Kiya was about 18 months old when hers began. You can also try the medsaver to save on prescriptions http://www.medsavercard.com/ Why did the vet not go with phenobarbitol? It's way less expensive.

Thanks for the info on the medsaver card. The vet said the phenobarbitol was the "gold standard" for seizures but that they had been having success with the Zonisamide and since she was young and the Zonisamide doesn't process through the liver like the Pheno, he wanted to start with it first. Leaving the Pheno and others in his back pocket. If it works, more than willing to spend the $30 a month on meds...

Well, she almost made it 4 weeks seizure free, but had 3 more on Monday. The vet upped her to 200MG Zonisamide 2x's a day.

Has anyone had any issues with intestinal problems starting before the seizures began?
