Disappointing Weekend

Post by ShilohsMom » Sun Jun 22, 2014 12:26 pm

I was pretty optimistic on Thursday and even Friday when Shiloh had gone 47 days seizure free and only had 1 seizure on each day, which was great for him. But as of right now he's had a total of 8 and I suspect he's going to be having another one at any moment. He's started salivating BUCKETS! Reminds me to wear my shoes around the house, cause that's nasty to step in. :D One thing that's been at least a bit better is his post-ictal. Because the seizures have been spaced at least a few hours apart he is bouncing back better than when they're really close together. Although as I type this I have to play keep-a-way with the laptop cause he won't leave me alone. Good thing I love the hairy beast or I'd have to consider trading him for a bag of shrimp.

I'll take him to work with me and call the vet in the morning and I'm sure they'll up one of his meds, except the Keppra cause he's maxed out on it. I hate how many meds he takes a day (15) and wonder what it does to his system but know what not taking them would do.

H Colleen,
I'm sorry you and Shiloh had such a rough weekend. It seems that just about the time we think we're getting some control this @#$$%!! disease blindsides us and shows us what's really in control. There have been so many times that we thought things were going to improve and they didn't. Then finally the seizures got a lot better. It wasn't what we'd hoped for. Not by a long shot. In the beginning I was determined that I was going to knock this disease out of Jake's life. By the second year it showed me how wrong I was. I really try to remember what our first vet told us, "As long as Jake's happy, that's what's important." Sometimes it's impossible to remember that or believe it. Especially when we've had a rough week. So hang in there.
Have you tried Clorazepate to break the clusters? I know you don't want to take on too many meds too soon, but Jake's been on it for 3.5 years and so far so good. It's kept us from having to use more Pb. And since he only takes it for a couple of days I thought it would be easier on him in the long run.
Keep us posted.

Thank you all for being there and your words. It means so much to have others that really do know what your going through.

Shiloh didn't have another seizure which really surprised me by his behavior, but he's still having some post-ictal behavior. The worst is the inability to settle down and the drooling. But he's so cute putting his head on my desk and looking at me, who cares if a users paperwork gets a bit of drool on it! :D

We're scheduled to go to the vet this afternoon and see what he says, I'll ask him about Clorazepate. To be honest I think the vet is really at a loss. He's been in communication with the doctors at various places, but I think Shiloh is just one of those dogs that isn't going to respond well to meds, but we'll keep trying and rejoice when we have whatever victories life throws at us.

Wishes and prayers that you all are doing well.

Hi Colleen,
Unfortunately the situation you have with Shiloh and we have with Jake happens a lot with Aussie's. They've come so close to finding the genetic link in the breed but so far I haven't heard about it happening yet. Not that it will help Jake and Shiloh, but I'm hoping it will help save the breed.
Let us know how you make out today.

Well the vet had contacted the specialist we had seen and they decided not to alter anything at this point. Will continue to use the Valium when/if needed to break up a cluster. He said that if we up meds that it doesn't leave any room later on if Shiloh continues because the meds have a build up effect. Good news is that he hasn't had a seizure since yesterday morning. Hopefully he'll get another reprieve.

He's actually resting and think the post ictal is done so I predict a night that includes sleep. Hope you all have a peaceful night.
