Any experience with meningitis?

Post by xkaelie » Mon Dec 09, 2013 8:42 am

Has anyone had any experience with meningitis? My dog had a spinal tap which came back normal, but the MRI showed meningitis around the brain.. They said it was the non bacteria one.. The one that messes up with the immune system. He has been on PhenoBarb, Potassium Bromide, and then after this they added Keppra. They also gave him Steriods and antiobotics.. He seemed to do pretty well until 2-3 weeks after which was not long after he stopped the antiobotics.. I am wondering if antibotics help him from having seizures what that means?

He has been on antiobotics before, due to UTI, and one time due to respratory infection. And both times I felt like he did very well- Trying all these seizure medicines and none of them working really makes me wonder if it is due to this meningitis, or another immune deficieny. And I am wondering if he still has the meningitis because you can't test for it unless you have another MRI.

Are you seeing a neurologist or a regular vet?

A regular Vet. However after the MRI the Vet ER doctor called a Neurologist who recommended the keppra. But I have never personally met with one.

Do you have access to one? The ER vet is consulting with a neuro, so that is a good thing, but I wonder if you could get a referral to a neuro and work directly with him/her? Primary vets don't always have enough knowledge for complicated things like meningitis.

Hi xkaelie,

we're in your same boat with the cost issues ... and my "regular" vet has a close friend who is a nuero that she get advice from too ... that has been a great help to me as she has been able to get info from the neuro that confirm's what I have told her about what I have learned "on-line" ... ... guess that tells you how lil' a regular vet know's if she has to confirm with the neuro friend what I already told her I learned "off the internet" ...

I find the meningitis, steriods, and antibiotics ... or another immune deficieny/reaction angle to seizures to be an interesting one that make me wonder if any or all of these things have a connection to the seizures or lack there of ... make me think of a silver bullet where by you just go on steriods and/or antibiotics for a short time and "waa-laa" your seizure free .... :D

let us know how it goes,

Well he started the steriods and antibotics on 12/11/13, so today is a week. He has had one over hour long seizure (Which is what he was having on a daily basis), and small 3-5 minute seizure here and there. I don't know how long the medicine will take, or if he is too far gone.

So he is improving but not seizure free like he was the last time he was on these medicines.

I am going to try and give it another week and hope he's completely seizure free although my boyfriend may disagree. :(
