I really think the seizures are due to a pulled, pinched or damaged nerve.
The strap mark you mention could be caused by the fur being pulled like when a dog raises it's hackels and this is all done by the nerve endings.
I think you need to get some x-rays or scans of this are to determine exactly what is wrong and then decide what sort of treatment is appropriate whether manipulation by a chiropractor or if it requires surgery. If it is nerve damage no amount of anti-seizures drugs are going to stop it.

Yes, that is when this all started. Xrays show problems in 2 areas on his back but nothing was ever done about it.

I agree, figure out what's going on with the back and if it can be fixed or even helped, I think you have a great chance of overcoming the seizures. Please keep us posted, I think this is very interesting. Good luck!!!!!

Yesterday was a bad day for us. Jake threw up his 3 pm dose and seized off and on all afternoon. Vet finally called back and we gave a bolster so he is fine now. Finally got a picture of the strapping I have been talking about. As soon as I figure out if I can attach it here I will provide the pictures.

If you can not view please let me know. If we catch him at this point and massage him we can prevent the seizures. If the strap goes all the way across and gets about 1" deep then we can not stop the seizure. Copy and paste URL into your browser.

I can see the picture, very strange. I am going to a dinner tonight with a dog chiropractor and I will talk to her about this. We are in California, so she would not be able to help, but hopefully can give some direction. I wonder why Jake's Vet has not pursued this?????

I am not sure myself. We are looking into trying to get him into the Univ Of WI Vet Medical Hospital. It will mean a 4 hour drive but I think if we address his back we might bring the seizures under control.

From what I can see on the picture it looks like reversal of raising hackles where the hair is actually being pulled down almost like a contraction of the nerve. This really needs to be checked out as it may stop the seizures.
I would go to a different vet if this one is not persuing something so strange.

I am in the process of finding a new vet. We actually found out that if we are not cautious, we can bring on a seizure but touching a certain area on his back. Unfortunately my resources are tight right now so we are saving for the process. His meds are keeping him under control for the most part and anyone who comes in is now instructed what areas not to touch. I hope to be able to take him somewhere else very soon.

Finally heard back from Chiropractor

Post by claires friend » Fri May 01, 2009 3:42 pm

She fell and broke her arm. This was her response"Finally remembered to show Stephanie the photo of that dog 'strapping' before a seizure. She said that it looks like a nerve band and that chiropractic should help - if there is anything out of alignment, which is likely. Tell the people to look for someone in their area who belongs to the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association

Break Through with strapping

Post by devonsnana » Fri May 01, 2009 7:22 pm

He is doing very well, we enlarged the dog door to prevent him from hitting his head which he does frequently and leave another access open for him all the time. I am going to search for an orthopedic as we have xrays showing some form of alignment problem. Do to weight gain we have had to increase the PHeno so he gets 194.4 mg daily and 800 mg of Potassium daily. I hope we can easy him as his seizures do not act like seizures I have seen in any other animal.
