Need to lose weight
Hello all,
I have a 4 yr old male Irish Setter. Had his first seizure in May 2010 and since cluster seizure almost every 2 weeks. We have increased his phenobarb to 120 mg X2 daily 3 weeks ago and since then he has not had another attack. "Touch wood".
But, with the increase in phenobarb, his appetite has increased and thus his weight. He currently weighs around 40 kgs and I need to bring it down to 30 Kgs.
He is currently on fresh home cooked food.....brown rice, chicken & vegetables. 2.5 cups of brown rice served in 4-5 portions throughout the day.
Need advise/help on how to bring his weight down....which will help me to reduce his dosage.
Regards,
Karthik

Re: Need to lose weight
Try cutting out some of the rice and give him green beans in its place. Lots of Irish Setter owners do this when the kids get too heavy. the beans aren't fattening and it will help fill his belly. I was lucky, the meds never caused weight gain with my Irish, I guess he was too active and was underweight when he started taking the meds in the beginning.

Re: Need to lose weight
I haven't had to worry about excessive weight gain with Apache. Ironically, the Phenobarbital has had no effect on his appetite (with the exception of the first week) which has always puzzled the vet. Vivian's suggestion sounds good, though.
Good luck!

Re: Need to lose weight
When you say Green beans, which ones exactly? Apparently, there are multiple kinds of green beans.
Thanks,
Karthik

I think Vivian is referring to the green string bean. You can buy them in tins, whole, or cut up. The ones already cut are probably best. Don't buy the French Style, (as much as I enjoy them) because I believe they have bits of onion in the tin.

Re: Need to lose weight
green beans seem to be very interesting for weight loss.
However i want to ask u sthing. Recently i read that many meals in the day helping on weight loss for humans and also that apple is a very good fruit for weight loss (it comsumes more energy to get digested than the energy it gives to us.)- source: http://www.diaitaplus.gr
its easy to find many of theese "weight loss" tips that really working on humans. But my question is: are they valid rules for dogs?

It never hurts to try to lose weight by dieting. In my opinion, with a more ideal body, a person can become easier to perform daily activities. In addition, the body can become more healthy and fresh. Learn More
