Cost of taurine levels checked?

Post by seebr5640 » Sun May 15, 2011 7:36 am

The below is copied from a prior post from Dr. Patterson.
"At the University of Minnesota we can measure serum taurine levels. If you are really interested in this I would recommend trying to find a vet that can have taurine levels measured. If they were truly low it would be worth a try to see if supplementation might improve seizure control. If the levels are normal I do not see any physiologic reason why taurine supplementation would be likely to significantly improve seizure control."

I was wondering if anyone could provide me the University of Minnesota link that would direct me to the shipping address and cost to have the taurine levels checked on my epi-Sampson. I have read that taurine has helped others with their dogs seizures. But I would like to have Sampon's levels checked and was curious what the cost was before I asked the vet to do it. Especially since the premium quality kibbles I feed him already has taurine in it.

Barb,

Most of us have given Taurine without doing levels. My boy weighed app. 70 lbs and got 500 mgs BID of Taurine if that helps.

Vivian,

Thanks. I was thinking about going ahead and putting Sampson on Taurine. I just need to find it. I have not been able to find it. I will have to see if GNC has it.

Hi, Barb,

You may want to check any sports nutrition retailer in your area. They carry a varied supply of supplements. That's where we buy Apache's taurine.

Thanks everyone!

I was able to find the Taurine at the Vitamin Shoppe. I got the Solgar 500 mg veggie caps. I'm giving Sampson half twice a day to see how he adjusts to it. Then will give him 500 mg twice a day. The vet did not know how much to give him. So I had to go by what others are giving. Does 500 mg twice a day seem to be ok for 39 pound dog?
