Is the red meat helping?

Post by Crazy Dog Lady » Mon Oct 14, 2013 6:49 am

I have always fed my dogs kibble plus some fresh meat on top to make the kibble more palatable. I used to feed mostly turkey or chicken, but in recent months, I've moved towards more lean beef, pork, lamb, bison and duck. Perhaps not coincidentally, my epileptic dog is now going three weeks or more between seizures, whereas before we were lucky to get two weeks (before her cocktail of Keppra, Zonisamide and phenobarbital she was seizing twice a week). Is the red meat helping? I know that there are amino acids in red meat that are critical to brain and nervous system health.

I'm not sure if red meat can help but I want to ask if you try to feed your dog without kibble? You can change your dog diet like you can include veggies on your dog diet.

Yes, I've made home-cooked meals for her but did not see any improvement. We saw slightly fewer seizures after eliminating preservatives like BHA and sodium metabisulfite from her diet, but the most recent improvement has come after adding more red meat.

Taurine occurs naturally in food, especially in seafood and meat.
