Oh no!!!!!!!! I'm sending out plenty of zen for Barney!!! (the Irish Setter variety, the best around).

It seems that lots of the dogs that are difficult to control cannot be weaned off of medications. I know my MK landed in emergency when we weaned him from the Pb and I'll never make that mistake again. I'll have to go reread your posts to refresh my memory, I cannot recall which drug Barney was taken off of. Did your vet put him on another drug in place of that one?

Please keep us posted.

I went back and read your posts and I now remember what started this.

I have read everywhere that a dog has to be weaned slowly off of a medication, not taken off completely. I'm worried that your vet is not knowledgeable to be treating this disorder, but if he's all you've got then you'll have to take suggestions to him. Has he at least increased the Pb?

MK's KBr levels were in the toxic range last month and my neurologist said that to be a little high isn't a huge concern and that to reduce could possible cause what Barney is going through.

I wish your vet had a plan to try another medication, or increase the Pb to pick up the slack of the KBr. Have they given him a loading dose of anything?

only you and barney can make the decision. don`t let anyone try and "help" you.
was so hopeing for better news for the both of you.
my vet is "small town " too. but he uses the internet and the phone to call other vets for advice. please don` t feel you arn`t giving him the best care possiable.I really don`t think a fancy neuro vet center could do much else.

I don't think Barney is ready to throw in the towel yet!!!! He's only 3 years old and can still fight. If he went into a seizure that lasted a long time and they couldn't pull him out of it, then maybe because it could cause brain damage, but that hasn't happened yet.

I think Barney did well for 2 weeks once the KBr was stopped because he still had it in his system but wasn't getting anymore added in. I hope your vet can get it regulated once he's over this episode or at least try a different drug. There's a list of them on the Epilepsy Guardian Angels website, maybe your vet could consult with another vet and see if any of them have had luck with something else.

I feel for you, I know the worry you're experiencing and the fear. I wish the researchers could find a cure for this monster or at least find the reason that some dogs seize and why some dogs seize worse than others. The dogs on this list are the unlucky ones that have it bad.

I'm happy that Barney is still with you today, I'll be checking later on to read that he's coming out of the anesthetic and he's on the road to recovery.

Keeping you and Barney in my prayers. I do hope that he will improve soon. I know this must be very hard on both of you but I also agree, don't throw in the towel yet. Should it get to the point where you know you and the vet have done your very best and there is just no other alternative and you don't want to see Barney suffer, then decisions will have to be made, but it sounds to me, as you said, Barney is quite the fighter and isn't ready to give up yet. There are many, many more drugs out there that can be tried, suggest some of the others, and if your vet is unaware of them, research from the epi sites and take the paperwork to him. My vet or I really didn't know much about Zonisimide, but we are learning together and he is always open to suggestions, because he, just like your vets care about your pet and is very concerned about his well being. Lots of hugs to you and Barney, please keep us updated.

That is the post ictal phase that Barney is going thru. MK went thru it for a couple of days after his last hospital visit. Those cluster seizures and status take the stuffing out of the little guys and it will take time for him to get back to his old self. He might do strange things for a couple of days because he's so discombobulated.

Glad he's home. He'll be happier and so will you.
