A great run ended - starting over again
The Monster returned on Thurs 5th March at 6:15pm. I had forgotten how ghastly this monster is.
Poppy had been seizure free since starting on phenobarb on 24th Dec 2006. I can't understand what went wrong, but can only think she somehow managed to 'spit' her tablet out. Nothing else has changed in her routine.
I am now back to waking every time she moves or makes a noise. I need some sleep!
Poppy is due her blood and liver function test in April, but I think I will get the vet to run them sooner.

Wow, with a run like that you must have thought it was all over with forever. There must be something environmental that is causing Poppy's seizures??
I hope she gets another 2 + years seizure free, you're very lucky.

Wow is right! 2 years. I was really dissapointed when Kiya broke her 10 month streak. I think I've gotten better at handling myself now. I try to convince myself it is what it is, theres nothing I can do about it and I try not to let it get to me. After hearing from a woman once who hadn't had a seizure in many years but still had to take meds I accepted the fact that chances are this is forever for my girl. I hope we all can keep long, long seizure free periods.

Hi Carolyn
I too have accepted that Poppy has this condition and will have to take medication for the rest of her life. At the beginning I was horrified to think that she would have to be on Pb forever!
I really do think that this was a case of her not taking her tablet in the morning and her Pb levels dropped too low and hence the seizure that evening (just before her next dose of Pb).
Last year, my vet did suggest that we maybe start to lower the dose and try to wean her off. I was against this, and this episode has confirmed to me that she will most likely stay on meds for life now.
Hopefully this was just a one off!

wow what an amazing run. I'm sorry to see that it got stopped. I would have to agree that it is possible that the pill got loose! Hopefully no more go wandering off in the future. I always give a dog cookie with a little peanut butter to be safe, he's on too many pills to have on fall out or get stuck in his big ol cheeks

Well, it obviously wasn't a missed Pb tablet. Poppy had another seizure this morning at 2:10am.
I was woken by her screaming (She has never done that before during a seizure).
I'm making an appointment at the vets, so that we can talk things through. If they are happening every couple of weeks, it means that the medication is no longer keeping the seizures at bay, and she probably needs the Pb upping or another drug added.
I feel totaly deflated by this, as I really thought we had this beat. I'm hoping something can be done for her.

I thought you had it beat, too! It makes you wonder how she could go a couple of years without an episode and it's starting up again now!! I feel for you, hopefully your vet can tweak her meds and you can enjoy another couple of years sans the monster.

Update
Poppy's results came back last week. Her Pb is in therapeutic range, and her liver is coping well. So we are no closer to knowing why her seizures started up again.
I'm keeping a diary in case I can find some sort of pattern, but hoping that this was just a 'hiccup' and we will have another great run seizure free.
If the seizures continue every couple of weeks, I'll discuss her medication with the vet.
