NEW: October 2012 Canine Epilepsy Clinical Trial (NC State)

Hi Guys,

I'm always looking for new clinical trials for canine epilepsy. Unfortunately my dog does not qualify for this trial (i.e., previously treated with anti-seizure meds), but I wanted to post it here in case any dog owners new to epilepsy might be interested. If you qualify, the study takes place at NC State and you receive free medical evals and diagnostic tests (including CT scan or MRI if dog is over 5 years old). I'm assuming the study is still on-going (even though it was posted as of October, I had not heard of it) as it does not say the study is closed yet like some of the others listed on their site.

North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine is participating in a national clinical trial evaluating a new drug to treat canine idiopathic epilepsy. Qualifying canine patients must be at least four months old, not previously treated with anti-seizure medicaiton, weigh at least1.5 kg, have no previous history of seizure clusters, and not be pregnant. Candidates must be seen by the clinical investigator within seven days of the most recent seizure. Dogs that meet the initial eligibility criteria receive free medical evaluations and diagnostic tests. Dogs that are enrolled in the treatment phase of the study receive free medication (no placebo) and monthly exams as well as a CT scan or MRI if over five years of age. Every year Canine Epilepsy Resources prints a calendar with pictures of members dogs that suffer from epilepsy all proceeds from the sale of the calendars go to North Carolina, its good to hear on going studies, maybe someday we'll have more answers.

My dog Zoey participated in the clinical trial similar in Chicago, it was fantastic, all of the costs were covered. She actually got kicked out of the study because they found a congenital defect in her brain to be causing her seizures and felt that she would not be a good candidate to represent dogs with idiopathic epilepsy. But at least now I know...and I was able to get her the best medical care available for no fee. Dr. Neimen and Dr. Podell at the Chicago Vet Specialists are wonderful. And I believe this is still on-going. Good luck!
