I have been reading that Idiopathic Epilepsy is considered inherited, and focal seizures are more indicative towards secondary causes.

Is this so even when focal seizures turn into the more generalized seizure (grand mal/gm)? Would it be possible to have focal seizures and grand mal types, or a mixture of focal, gm's, and complex focal seizures in a pet and still have idiopathic epilepsy or do focals ALWAYS means secondary causes? And finally, is the predisposition to having (any) seizures genetic?

Thanks,
Light

I have never heard this theory before, but that doesn't mean it's not true. :)

Yes, many of our dogs inherited their epilepsy and some believe it skips generations in dogs. (another theory). Even in human medicine the neurologists cannot pinpoint exact causes for seizures, so all any of us can do is guess.. unless the epilepsy is secondary or brought on by an injury, toxin or tick borne disease.
